About The Bed Shop in Ashby

The Bed Shop in Ashby is a family run business, now in our 10th year of trading. Established in May 2004, we opened the shop to provide a specialised bed centre built on good old-fashioned values. Product knowledge, customer service and value for money were, and still are, at the heart of everything we do.

Exceptional Customer Service

The vast majority of our business is repeat business and recommendations. This is due to the exceptional end-to-end customer service we provide, beginning with the meet and greet you receive when you enter the shop, the assistance you receive in the showroom in helping you choose the right bed and the space provided to make up your own mind without any pushy sales tactics. This continues all the way through to the free delivery of your order (within 20 miles), where we install your new bed or mattress for you. We’ll also offer a service to remove your old bed frame or mattress for a small charge.

We’re a traditional store with good old fashioned values – and customer service is still king here!

If you experience any problems at all, there’s no call centres or head office to negotiate. Just call the shop or pop in to see us and we’ll ensure any issues are resolved in a timely manner and to your complete satisfaction. We’re a traditional store with good old fashioned values – and customer service is still king here!

Trusted British Suppliers

We are a “Buy British” shop with all beds sourced from British suppliers and we only stock traditional, high quality brands such as Salus, Hypnos, Myer’s, Staples, Silentnight and Rest Assured. From each brand we cherry-pick the very best tried-and-trusted products, to make it easy for our customers to make the right choice. We stock pocket sprung, memory foam and combination mattresses and all come with either a 5 or 10 year manufacturer’s warranty. We strive to ensure we are always competitively priced and run a Price Match Promise, in the unlikely event that you find the item cheaper elsewhere. From starter to mid-range and all the way up to the top-end, at The Bed Shop in Ashby you’ll have no problems finding the right bed at the right price for you.

We Go the Extra Mile

We’re always prepared to go the extra mile to ensure our customers are happy. For example, we had a regular customer who was so happy with the beds he bought from us that when they needed replacing, he contacted us to ask if we’d be happy to deliver them to his new home – in Boston, USA! Of course, we were only too happy to oblige and duly arranged for the beds to be shipped over. And we’ve similar stories for customers in St Ives, Lancaster Gate, Wales and North Yorkshire – the customer always comes first at The Bed Shop in Ashby.

Our History

Our original Bed Shop in Leicester was located on Derby Road, opposite the old Somerfield store, which is now the Co-op superstore. The Bed Shop was taken over from the, Ilkeston Co-op group and was one of 4 “Sleepers Bed Centres”, established by Ilkeston Co-op during their expansions in the 90’s. Prior to that the retail until was a furnishings store named “Redferns Furnishings” which had been there for over 25 years.

In 2007, The Bed Shop moved to it’s current premises on Market Street due to redevelopment of the old site into accommodation, offices and small retail units. The new premises were taken over from Ashby Carpets who’d occupied the premises for over 20 years but were now seeking to downsize. Having survived the credit crunch, The Bed Shop in Ashby is proud to be trading in our 7th year at our new high street location.

As a family run business, we’re a staunch believer in high street retail and are committed to ensuring the Bed Shop in Ashby remains a firm fixture on the Ashby high street for generations to come.

Brian Cooper, over 35 years in the trade!

As a schoolboy, in the summer of 1978, Brian was offered a Saturday job at Thorpes of Ilkeston, a lovely high class dining room and upholstery specialist (who are still trading today and now over 100 years old). The following year, he left school and was taken on at Thorpes, working for Mr & Mrs Thorpe senior, as a full-time sales assistant. Trained in the old-fashioned way (like an apprenticeship), Brian spent a further 7 years working at Thorpes where he gained invaluable knowledge within the trade.

In 1986, the year Brian was married, he was fortunate to be offered a job at the Ilkeston Co-op department store and during the 11 fantastic years he had with them, Brian grew from sales assistant in the furniture department to group buyer for upholstery, dining cabinets, beds and bedroom furniture.

Brian fulfilled his ambition to work in a city centre department store, when he was headhunted by Browns  of York in the summer of 1997, where he became their Bed/Furniture Buyer. The following year, he joined Cousins of Birmingham as Deputy Store Manager before being head-hunted back by the Ilkeston Co-op Group in 1999, to head up an expansion plan to create stand-alone bed centres in Long Eaton, West Bridgford & Ashby de la Zouch.

After a further 5 years with the Ilkeston Co-op Group,  Brian was given the opportunity in 2003 to takeover the Sleepers Bed Centre in Ashby de la Zouch, as the Ilkeston Co-op Group had decided to relinquish the business. Brain seized the opportunity and the Bed Shop in Ashby was born!
